The YMWAHA Steel Pan program is at the core of our arts program. Participants in the
steel pan program ranges from elementary, to high school age, to adults. The popularity of
the program and family members’ eagerness to learn what their children are learning
has spawned a weekly adult class.
Known as the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago the steel pans are
chromatically pitched percussion instruments made from 55 gallon barrels that usually
store oil. YMWAHA’s steel pan classes are taught by Master instructor Phil Solomon
who is also a steel pan manufacturer, composer, arranger and currently teaches steel
pan in several schools in Allegheny County and has been the YMWAHA steel pan
instructor since the mid 1990’s.
