The magnificent quilt “Mandela” enveloped the pulpit of Pittsburgh’s Calvary Episcopal Church where the Most Reverend Desmond Mpilo Tutu, Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town, South Africa, spoke at An Interfaith Service for Justice and Peace on October 25, 2007. |
Archbishop Tutu stands above “Mandela” as he delivers his extraordinary address on diversity and social justice. He was also conferred the honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters by the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University.
|
Envisioned by YMWAHA Executive Director Janice Parks and other community members, “Mandela” was cooperatively designed and pieced by members of the Nia Quilters’ Guild. Free motion quilting by Sandra German and finish binding by Master Quilter Ruth Ward was completed in June 2007.

Attendance at the standing-room-only interfaith service included, left to right, Master Quilter Ruth Ward, YMWAHA Executive Director Janice Parks, and Director of Programs Elmer Goodson.
